What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback, also known as neurotherapy or EEG Biofeedback, is a form of complementary medicine that can help treat a wide range of issues such as anxiety, depression, attention deficits, headaches, and behavior and sleep disorders. In addition, it can help regulate body functions such as the pulmonary, cardiac, gastrointestinal, endocrine, urinary, reproductive, and immunological systems. It can also improve the quality of life for those who would like to optimize their performance whether physiological or psychological.
How Does it Work?
It works by promoting self-regulation in the central nervous system (CNS) to enhance physical and emotional calmness, organization, attention, creativity, and motivation. Thus, one can attain higher achievement in school, work, sports, artistic endeavors, and musical performance. We apply electrodes to the scalp to “listen” to brainwave activity, during which a specifically designed computer system extracts information about key brainwave frequencies. Some frequencies we wish to promote while others we wish to diminish.
The system reflects this information to the person via a video game or movie. As the person
plays or watches, the brainwave activity becomes "shaped" toward more desirable,
more regulated performance. The targeted frequencies and specific locations on the scalp correlate to the conditions addressed.
Neurofeedback can be analogous to a ballet dancer practicing in front of a mirror – the more she practices by watching the reflection of her movements, the better she can perform.
