Coaching versus Therapy

Many explanations exist that reflect the broad range of styles, theories, and approaches of both coaching and therapy. Because these methods intersect and overlap, the line gets fuzzy.  I consider the two practices as existing on a spectrum rather than distinct disciplines.

Using the analogy of snorkeling versus scuba diving, coaching seems more akin to snorkeling – generally moving forward, viewing the depths from a distance, and occasionally taking a quick deep dive to look more closely at something below.  Therapy may be more akin to scuba diving, going deeper and slower to explore, uncover, and process thoughts and feelings in the depths of your mind and body to yield relief from mental and emotional distress.
